J.R. Fugett Middle School is located in West Chester in the Philadelphia suburbs, in south-east Pennsylvania, it is part of West Chester Area School District (WCASD). It is right on the border of the East Goshen and West Goshen, on Ellis Lane and Paoli Pike. Fugett is connected to and formally part of West Chester East High School, and they share fields, a hallway and parking lots.

There are three floors and a basement of Fugett Middle School. Each floor holds a different grade the first floor holds the eighth grade, the second floor houses the seventh grade, and the third floor is home to the sixth grade. The opposite side of the building holds the Unified Arts wing. With the basement containing the F.C.S. and Tech. Ed. rooms, the first floor holding the cafeteria, and the second floor housing the music and art rooms. The center of the school is where the gym, main office, and auditorium are.
At the beginning of the year, students are sorted into teams. These teams have a teacher for each subject and comprise several homerooms. There are two teams for the sixth grade, the A team and the B team. There are three teams for the seventh grade, the X team, the Y team, and the Z team. There are three teams for the eighth grade, the Blue team, the Gold team, and the Red team.
Cafeteria service and lunch is provided by Aramark like all the other WCASD schools. Lunch is served to grades individually. Eighth grade eats 4th period, seventh grade eats 6th period, and sixth grade eats 5th period.
The Athletics department offers a wide variety of sports including football, boy's and girl's soccer, cross country, volleyball, field hockey, wrestling, boy's and girl's basketball, track, baseball, softball, and girl's lacrosse.
The Library is on the second floor of the school, run by the head librarian and an aide. Students are also able to volunteer as aides. Books may be checked out for two weeks at a time and can be renewed as often as necessary. Fines for overdue books are $.25 per night overdue. The library contains many books on many subjects and subscribes to several online reference sources.
Fugett maintains an extensive technology program including e-mail, storage folders, use of Microsoft programs, a web page, online library catalog, and other things. Students will learn to use these things in Technology Education class and Computer Literacy Class.
At Fugett Middle School students are required to take five academic subjects. These are Science, Social Studies, English, Math, and Reading/Foreign Language (Spanish, French, German, Italian, Latin).
Fugett also hosts a wide variety of unified arts including Art, Technology Education, General Music, and F.C.SFamily and consumer science. There are also performing arts such as Band, Orchestra, Chorus, and Jazz Band.
There are several after school clubs at Fugett. These include Science Olympiad, Drama Club, Jazz Band, Sports (see sports above), the ski club, student council, Math Counts and more.
There are four guidance counselors at Fugett. Each guidance counselor is assigned a grade and will follow that grade throughout their middle school experience. The other counselor will teach guidance classes to eighth grade students.
There are three newspapers at Fugett: the Fugett Lowdown, a student made newspaper, and Cougar Clips, a newsletter put together by the staff. The Fugett Lowdown comes out once a month every Wednesday; Cougar Clips comes out every marking period. There is also a "Gifted Gazette" that is created by kids in the Enrichment program. It comes out once every marking period.
The WCASD uses a program called Edline which allows students to check their grades and other student information from home. It requires a password to access.
Joseph R. Fugett was a dedicated teacher and principal in the West Chester Area School District for many years. He was a graduate of Cornell University. Some time after his retirement the school was renamed J. R. Fugett Middle School for his dedication to the West Chester Area School District.
Fugett students have an opportunity to ski, snowboard and tube in Fridays during winter months at Bear Creek Ski and Recreation Area in Macungie, PAn and a trip during a Saturday to Jack Frost Ski Area in Blakeslee, Pennsylvania. This club is supported by Fugett teacher Mr.Nefos.
